This
was a large roadside Beech tree with a basal cavity which would
have been subject to wind throw and failure. Rather than fell this
tree to ground level, it was left as a pollard for habitat. The
tears are there to speed the decay process and encourage a more
natural appearance. The work was carried out for Surrey Wildlife
Trust Countryside Services.
